GovUnity’s web design process consists of 4 phases:
Phase 1: Project Strategy Discussion:
GovUnity’s Lead Designer on the project worked with the Borough’s primary contact person to establish likes/dislikes of the current website, and goals of the new design. The Borough of Oakmont also provided examples of websites with designs they liked. At this stage the also provided assets like logo files, documents, and images so our team could begin work on the new website.
Phase 2: Initial Design & Content Population:
We began developing the Borough of Oakmont’s website live on our own site. Content for the website either came from the Borough directly, or from migrating content over from the existing website. After the site development began to take shape, we shared a link to the new website with our point of contact from the Borough.
However, towards the need of this project the person from the Borough that was our main point of contact retired. The new point of contact requested some significant changes to the site in development. These changes were made as quickly and cleanly as possible, but did cause an unexpected delay in launching the new site.
Phase 3: Website Testing & Search Engine Optimization (SEO):
SEO is not something that happens at the end, it is something that is considered through every step of the process. GovUnity worked with the Borough of Oakmont from start to finish to ensure that their new site was SEO friendly.
GovUnity made sure that images had appropriate tags, and that all links worked properly. We made it a priority to minimize redirects and avoid dead links and 404 pages. We also addressed the use of proper keywords in content, tags, page titles and meta descriptions. After the website was launched, we submitted the XML sitemap file to search engines for indexing.
Beyond SEO, this phase also included testing the website’s functions. This happened during development and after the website launched. Both GovUnity team members’ and the Borough of Oakmont’s staff performed testing.
Phase 4: Training & Website Launch:
For this project website training was completed before the launch. Several staff and board members attended the in-person training at the Borough of Oakmont building (pre-COVID 19). We demonstrated the backend functions of the website in a step-by-step manner, and answered questions along the way. We also provided a detailed, customized training guide for staff to reference in the future.
After the Borough of Oakmont was happy with the design and content, the website was finalized and the launch date was scheduled. In the end the Borough received a website with a modern design and an easy-to-use CMS.
