Case Study: Penn Township Website Redesign
The website experts at GovUnity provided website redesign services for Penn Township in Allegheny County, PA. Penn Township’s outdated website design was not friendly for mobile-use. In addition, the CMS interface was difficult for staff to manage. GovUnity worked with Penn Township to create a responsive website with a modern design, on an intuitive and user-friendly CMS interface.
Notable Project Features Included:
- Responsive Design
- WordPress CMS
- Online Forms
- Online Calendars
- Mega menus
- Responsive Image Map of Municipal Organizational Structure
The website design process consists of 4 phases:
Phase 1: Project Strategy Discussion
During the first phase of the project the Lead Designer consulted with Penn Township’s Secretary about project objectives and likes/dislikes of the existing website. Afterwards, Penn Township provided examples of websites they liked to help GovUnity create the perfect custom design. After discussing design preferences, the Township provided assets including graphics, pictures, and documents.
Phase 2: Initial Design & Content Population
At this point, we began developing Penn Township’s new website live on our own website. Content was populated by migrating resources from the existing site and using other assets provided by the Township. After the site development began to take shape, we shared a link to the new website with Penn Township’s staff.
This link allowed Township staff to monitor the progress of the site, provide feedback, and request changes in the early design phases. Communication between the Township’s staff and GovUnity’s project designer continued throughout development. We addressed all change requests made by the Township quickly and the Township reviewed the changes at their convenience.
Phase 3: Website Testing/SEO
From the beginning GovUnity worked with the Township on Search Engine Optimization (SEO). At GovUnity SEO is NOT an afterthought. It is considered throughout every step of the project, from the first conversation to launch, training and beyond.
During the design phase we worked with the Township to ensure that images had appropriate tags, and that all links worked properly. Early on, we made it a priority to minimize redirects and avoid dead links and 404 pages. We also worked with Penn Township to ensure appropriate keywords were used in content, tags, page titles and meta descriptions. After the website was launched, we submitted the XML sitemap file to search engines for indexing.
Beyond SEO, this phase also included testing of website functions. This occurred during development and after the website launched. Both GovUnity team members and Penn Township staff performed testing.
Phase 4: Training/Website Launch
For this project the website training occurred before the launch through a screen-share meeting on Join.me. Several Township staff members attended the training. GovUnity provided a customized training document as a future reference guide. Once the Township was happy with the design and content of the website, everything was finalized, and the launch date was scheduled and executed.
In the end Penn Township received a responsive website with a modern design on an easy-to-use CMS. GovUnity focuses on working with clients to create accessible and easy to navigate government sites, so you can connect with your residents. Contact GovUnity to learn more.
